Collet Shields
The Collet Shield Holders (Collet SH) come in packs of 4 and are printed with TPU. They can be used to keep cutters from slipping out of the collet while at rest in the Magazine or Turret. They also keep the cutters from creeping up in the collet over multiple tool changes.
Depending on the cutter it may still creep over time but the distance that it creeps is considerably lessened.. For instance in our own machining we have found that while the chamfer bit will not fall out of the collet while at rest in the magazine, it will creep up rather quickly. We generally have had to adjust it about every 10 tool changes or so.
From the extensive testing we have done with the Collet SH method of holding cutters we found that the same amount of creep that we were getting with 10 tool changes requires over 200 tool changes. Some cutters have recorded less than .1 mm over 50 tool changes.
The Collet SH also has the added advantage of sealing off the exposed face of the collet keeping out dust and debris from the slits in the collet.
Use:
- Place the Collet SH on the cutter.
- Run a bead of CA glue around the outside of the Collet SH.
- Load the collet/nut assembly on the spindle by hand(this is required to make certain the cutter is perfectly centered to the clamping nut).
- Press the Collet SH to the clamping nut.
- spray some CA glue activator (Optional).
Removal:
- Remove the cutter from the collet/nut assembly.
- Use a putty knife or utility knife to pry the Collet SH from the clamping nut.
Multiple Use:
- You may replace the cutter with another one of the same diameter without removing the Collet SH.
